At the same time making new friends and developing both musically as well as personally?

 

Since the choir was started hundreds of girls have established life-long friendships and have participated in wonderful musical experiences.

 

Training choir (ages 8-10)

New members typically begin in the Training choir which is organized through the Trondheim Municipal School of Performing Arts. The Training choir is usually comprised of about 30 girls in the ages of 8-10 and is currently led by Johanne Bjørkhaug. The choir is open to everyone and no audition is required. Emphasis here is on learning to read music, musical theory and vocal technique. The training choir participates in 1-2 church services per semester, as well as a preschool church service annually.

There is often a waiting list to join the Training choir so remember to apply early!

The Junior Group (10-14 år)

In order to join this group an audition is required and usually you have finished two years in the Training choir. Required to join the Junior Group is knowledge of basic vocal skills and musical notation. Occasionally we can provide training in musical notation for those who have not yet had this previously. The group is usually composed of 35 girls. Choir rehearsals is every Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 pm. Extra rehearsals are often organized prior to the choir's events and performances. The girls sing at 3-4 church services in the Nidaros Cathedral and approximately 4 concerts in the cathedral annually. They also participate regularly at other events, such as the Christmas Concert by the Trondheim Symphony orchestra at Olavshallen. An annual tour is also usually taken. Membership fees are paid each semester.

 

The Senior Group (14-19 år)

No audition is necessary when moving from the Junior to the Senior group. However, new applicants from outside the choir must undergo both an audition as well as an assessment of adequate musical abilities such as vocal skills and notation. We can occasionally provide training in musical notation for those who have not yet had this. The Senior group is comprised of about 55 singers aged 14-19. The group has rehearsals every Tuesday from 5:00-8:00 pm, but often has extra rehearsals prior to concerts and other performances. The girls participate  at 2-3 church services in the Nidaros cathedral every semester and also perform about 4 concerts in the Cathedral throughout the year. Additionally there are many other concerts in which they are involved. The Senior group also travels on tours, both in Norway and abroad. Each vocal group within the choir maintains a group leader whose responsibilities include assisting the conductor at practice, good communication among the members, as well as maintaining a fun and cheerful atmosphere, etc. Membership fees are paid each semester.

• Recording CDs and TV productions

• A detailed semester plan communicated clearly and in advance to make your planning easier

• Weekly information via email outlining activities and the week’s homework

• Regular celebrations and social gatherings

• The free use of sheet music and choir robes

 

What the choir expects of you as a member

Nidaros Cathedral Girls’ Choir seeks a high level of artistic ambition and achievement. To reach these goals it requires hard work, discipline, and order. The following list presents some of the things the choir will expect of you and your parents:

 

• That you truly are interested in developing as a singer and willing to give your best

• Basic, and later advanced vocal ability (age dependent)

• Basic, and later advanced understanding of musical notation (age dependent)

• Dedicated self-practice with the music at home

• That you meet on time and are well-prepared for all of the choir’s activities

• That you are willing to prioritize choir rehearsals rather than a birthday party for example

• That you pay careful attention to the semester plan and set aside time and energy required for events such as rehearsals, church services, and concerts.

• That you commit to fulfill each semester once begun

 

Expectations of the parents:

 

• That you are willing to participate in various social activities, attend a couple of rehearsals each semester to assist with practicalities, and various committees.

• That you take responsibility to read the semester plan and emails from the choir, and make arrangements so that choir events are prioritized.

• That you ensure that the choir robes and notation are maintained properly and in good condition at all times.
